A team of biosystems engineers and scientists at Auburn has received a 2013 Superior Paper Award from the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers.

In the paper, “Surface transport of nutrients from surface broadcast and subsurface-banded broiler litter,” the team detailed its research on nutrient runoff from farmland fertilized with broiler litter and its findings that nitrogen and phosphorous transport into surface water and groundwater is significantly less when litter is applied in bands below the soil surface than when broadcast on top of the soil.

Biosystems engineering associate professor Puneet Srivastava led the team, which also included agronomy and soils professor Wes Wood, biosystems engineering professor Kyung Yoo, USDA National Soil Dynamics Laboratory research engineer Tom Way and former Srivastava graduate students Jasmeet Lamba and Sumit Sen.

The engineering society’s 2013 Superior Paper award recognizes the top 5 percent of articles published in its Soil and Water Division in 2012.
