Take 5 features quadriplegic master’s graduate

10 Jun

After an automobile accident left him a C-6 quadriplegic with some use of his arms, Franklin Butts went back to school to take drafting and design technology courses. He graduated from Southern Union State Community College as the 2005 Technical Student of the Year and then started at Auburn, where he earned his undergraduate and master’s degrees in industrial design.

Butts developed a power assist for manual wheelchair users as his thesis topic and worked with Auburn’s Office of Technology Transfer to get a provisional patent for his design. He was awarded a full U.S. Patent in April.
